New Promise Neighborhood Papers Provide Insight on Performance Indicators

The HCZ has teamed up with PolicyLink and the Center for the Study of Social Policy to produce “Focusing on Results in Promise Neighborhoods: Recommendations for the Federal Initiative.” Released earlier this month at the “Changing the Odds” conference, the discussion paper outlines a results-oriented framework that emphasizes performance and accountability. It also details core and optional results that can be used to assess the program on the local level. The report identifies core results as the central indicators that should be required of all communities. Optional results are described as important predictors of success that may not be emphasized by all program sites.

The document also references another report, Child Trends’ “Outcomes and Indicators for Children: An Analysis to Inform Discussions about Promise Neighborhoods,” as an important data source. This comprehensive piece provides detailed discussion of each potential indicator, ranging from infant health to graduation rates, and suggests sources for finding desired data.

As the HCZ, its partners, and the administration consistently emphasize the need for data accountability, these reports should serve as valuable assets to community leaders seeking to implement Promise Neighborhoods.
